Nice essay. In terms of foreign policy, the failure to rescue the hostages in Iran stands out, of course, but Carter also 1) did not get them killed; and 2) initiated the Carter Doctrine, including the development of the Rapid Deployment Force, stating the US policy to defend our interests in the Persian Gulf region, something all Presidents since have followed.

I'm less a fan of the Carter Doctrine -- given the subsequent military entanglements in the region -- but it's offset imo by his good policies in the Caribbean (and the transformation of South Florida).

I understand. I just meant that more "conservative" presidents after him followed suit - literally every one since Carter has deployed troops to the Gulf region for various conflicts. So, as you argue, his presidency presents more continuity with current policies than is often portrayed.
